About Course Availability

By default, your course is open and available to your students. However, you may change your course's availability status as you work on your course or once the course has finished.

You may set your course availability as follows:

  • Open: When a course is open, students can access the content and participate in assignments and activities.
  • Closed: When a course is closed, the course appears in students' course listings but they cannot open it, access content, or participate in assignments and activities.
  • Mark Course Complete: When the course is marked complete, students can view and access the content but can no longer participate in assignments and activities. Additionally, the instructor can no longer make any changes to the course.

Course Availability and Copied Courses

When you copy content from a previous course into your current course, certain items, such as Due Dates, are included in the copy. In order to prevent students from seeing old information while you are updating your content, we strongly suggest setting your course to Closed

Note: If you requested a course copy via the Course Copy Request Form, your course will have been set to Closed. You will need to Open your course in order for students to access the content.

Set Your Course Availability

You may change your course availability either from the Courses page in the base navigation or from within the course itself.

From the Courses page, locate your course and click on the More Options (three dots) menu next to your course name. This will open a menu. Select Course Settings. This will bring you to your Course Settings page.

Alternately, from within your course, click on Course Settings at the top of the page. This will bring you to your Course Settings page.

Once you are in your Course Settings, go to the Course Access section and select whether your course should be Open, Closed, or Complete.
