Creating a Test
myLesley supports a large number of test formats including multiple choice, essay, short answer, calculated numeric, and more, all which may be taken online. You may also wish to collect anonymous student feedback using the Survey feature.
The Create a Test in Blackboard video tutorial will walk you through creating a test in Blackboard.
Create the Test
To create a test, go into a content area and click on the Assessments tab at the top of the page. This will open a menu. Select Test.
This will bring you to the Create Test area. Click Create to create a new test.
Enter your test information. Give your test a name and enter a description (optional) and any instructions for your students. Click Submit to continue.
You will now be brought into the Test Canvas.
Creating Test Questions
Click Create Question to choose a question type and begin creating your test.
Add your questions to the test and enter the number of points per question.

Once you have finished adding questions to your test, OK at the bottom of the page.
You will be brought back to the Create Test page. Select the test you just created and click Submit.
You will now be prompted to enter the options for your test.
Setting Your Test Options
Once you have created questions for your test and saved it, you will be prompted to create your test options.
In the Test Information section, you may add a name for the link to your test. By default, this is the same as the name of your test.
You may also add a description for your link (this may be the same as your test instructions).
The Test Availability section allows you to add the availability options for your students. This includes when they can see the test and how many times they can take it.
Make Available to Students
Select make available to students to allow students to view the test. If you do not click the button to make the test available, students will not be able to take your test.
Add a New Announcement
Select whether or not you wish to create a new announcement for this test. If selected, it will automatically create an announcement to let students know that the test is available.
You may decide how many times you wish to allow students to take the test. By default, students can only take the test once. If you select multiple or unlimited attempts, you may decide which of the attempts will be calculated in the Grade Center: last graded attempt, highest grade, lowest grade, first graded attempt, average of graded attempts.
If only some of your students will be given multiple attempts (ex for accommodations), see Test Availability Exceptions.
As a best practice, we do not recommend using Force Completion. The Force Completion option requires students to complete the test when they launch it. Students may only access the test ONE TIME. They may not exit and re-enter the test. If students accidentally close their browser, leave the test page, experience internet connectivity issues, the test will end and submit. Students will need to contact their instructor to request a new attempt.
Set Timer and Auto Submit
You may set a timer to limit students’ completion time. You can set the timer to auto-submit the test when the timer ends or allow students to continue working and manually submit when they have finished. If some of your students have accommodations for untimed tests, you may use the Test Availability Exceptions to remove the timer for those students.
If you turn on Auto Submit, tests are automatically saved and submitted when the time expires, whether or not the student has finished the test. If you do not select the Auto Submit option, students may continue to work past the time and submit once they have completed.
During a timed test, the time elapsed is displayed to students. Timer warnings appear at set increments when half the time remains down to 30 seconds.
If a student saves and exits the test or loses internet connection during a timed test, they can access the test and continue to work once the connection is restored.

Display After/Display Until
You may set the dates/times that the students may access the test. Students will only be able access the test during these times.
Test Availability Exceptions
The Test Availability Exceptions allows you to change your test availability for individual students or a group of students. Depending on your student(s) accommodations, you may set their test to have multiple or unlimited attempts, remove the timer or change the time, remove auto submit, or change the availability dates.
Set a due date for your test. This due date will appear on the Calendar and in the Activity Stream. To prevent late submissions, select Do not allow students to start the Test after the due date has passed.
By default, tests are included in Grade Center calculations. However, you can allow students to take tests for review or practice by hiding students' scores in the Grade Center.
Include this Test in Grade Center Score Calculations:
You can include this test in Grade Center calculations. If the test isn't included, the score doesn't affect any Grade Center calculations.
Hide Results for this Test Completely from Instructor and the Grade Center:
You can hide this test score from you and exclude it from Grade Center calculations. The display in the Grade Center will read Complete/Incomplete and N/A or zero appears on the Grade Details page. You can't see students' answers to questions. Students can view their own scores.
Results and Feedback Options
In the Show Test Results and Feedback to Students section choose how you wish your students to view their test results (after submission, on a specific date, etc.).
Set when appropriate test results and feedback are shown to students:
- After Submission: This option is the default. Students will see their results and feedback immediately after submission.
- One-time View: After students submit their tests or surveys, the selected results and feedback options are in effect for students to view ONCE. Immediately after a student navigates away from the test or survey, any other results and feedback are restricted.
- On Specific Date: View results and feedback after the selected date and time.
- After Due Date: Students will be able to view their results after the due date has passed.
- After Availability and End Date: Students will be able to view their results after the Availability End Date has passed (only applicable if you selected an availability end date).
- After Attempts are graded: After all students submit the test or survey, and all attempts are graded, students will be able to view the results. If one or more students do not submit an attempt, you must assign a grade of 0 so that your students can view their test results.
Score per Question
Show the score earned for each test question. Uncheck the box if you don't want to show scores for individual questions.
You can allow students to see information about their answers:
- All Answers: Show all answer options.
- Correct: Show the correct answers.
- Submitted: Show all of a student's submitted answers.
Show instructor-generated feedback for each question. If you do not select this option, students will not be able to view your feedback.
Show Incorrect Questions
Show the questions a student answered incorrectly or partially incorrectly.
In the Test Presentation section you may choose whether the students see the test all at once (in one scrolling list) or one question at a time. If you select One at a Time, students will not be able to go back to previous questions. You also have the option to randomize the questions so that they can appear in any order, not necessarily the order in which they were created.
Once you have finished selecting your options, click Submit to save your changes. More information on Test Options may be found here: Test and Survey Options.
Editing Tests and Questions
Once you have created your test you may add, edit, and delete questions, add question sets, reorder a questions, or edit a test's information, See Edit Tests and Questions for more information.
The Question Pool serves as an inventory of questions that you can that you can include in tests and surveys. You may also export and import pools for use in tests in other courses.. See Question Pools for more information.
Blackboard allows you to reuse questions from all existing tests, surveys, and pools in your course.
When building your test, click Reuse Question at the top of the page.
You will have the option to create a Question Set, a Random Block, or find existing questions. For more information see:
On the Find Questions page you can browse, preview, filter, and select test questions created or imported into your course. See Find Questions for more information.
A Question Set is a collection of questions drawn from selected tests and pools. Choose how many questions you want in each set and the questions will be randomly chosen each time a student takes a test. See Question Sets for more information.
A random block is a set of random questions that is presented each time a student takes a test. See Random Blocks for more information.
Question Settings and Metadata
The Question Settings page allows you to adjust question settings, including scoring, feedback, images, extra credit, etc. See Question Settings for more information.
