How to Set a Virtual Background in Zoom
- Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
- In the Settings panel, select Background & Effects (you may also see this labeled Backgrounds & Filters depending on your version of Zoom).
- Click the + icon to add a new background, then select Upload Image.
- Browse to the downloaded file and select it. The background will be added to your library and applied automatically.
- To set a background during a meeting, click the ↑ arrow next to the Start/Stop Video button in your meeting controls, then select Choose Virtual Background and pick your image.
Note: Virtual backgrounds may not be available on all devices. If you do not see the Background & Effects option, your computer may not meet Zoom's requirements for this feature.
How to Set a Virtual Background in Microsoft Teams
- Open the Microsoft Teams desktop app and sign in.
- Before joining a meeting: On the meeting pre-join screen, click Background filters (or Video effects). Under "More video effects," click Add new, browse to your downloaded file, and select it. Click Apply to set it as your background before joining.
- During a meeting: Click the More (⋯) button in your meeting controls and select Video effects and settings. Click Add new, browse to your downloaded file, select it, then click Apply.
Note: Background effects in Teams require the desktop app — this feature is not available in the Teams web browser version. It is also not available on Linux. If the background option is grayed out or missing, make sure your camera is turned on, and check that your Teams app is up to date. If the option remains unavailable, contact the Lesley IT Help Desk, as your account settings may need to be adjusted.
