About Kaltura Captions

When you upload media to Kaltura, captions are created automatically using automatic speech recognition (ASR). Captions are created based on the audio track and the content is assumed to be in English.

ASR captions are estimated to be 85% accurate and accuracy may vary depending on the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. We recommend using the ASR captions as a starting point - you will want to edit them for accuracy.

Review and Edit Captions

You can manage and edit your captions in your Kaltura My Media. To access your My Media, click on the Tools link in the Global Navigation menu. This will bring you to the Tools area. Select Kaltura My Media.

From your My Media, locate your media, and click on the title This will bring you to the media page.

Click on the Actions menu below your media and select Caption & Enrich.

Here, you can edit your existing captions or order additional captions or enrichment services.

In the Existing Requests area, locate your caption request and click the Edit button (pencil icon). This will open the Closed Captions Editor.

The Closed Captions Editor will allow you to review and edit the text, change the timestamp, add speakers, and more. You may play your media to better synch your text with the audio and visuals.

Click Edit details to edit your caption details, including the language, accuracy, and label.

Type text into the search bar to find it in the captions. Or click Replace to find and replace all instances of the text in the captions.

If you have multiple speakers or presenters, you can add a speaker's name to the start of selected captions. Select the row(s) where you want to add a speaker and click Add Speaker.

Click on a caption line to edit, delete, or add a new caption line. When you click on a caption line, the player will jump to the correct frame for the selected text, allowing you to better align your text with the on-screen content.

Once you have finished your edits, click Save.

You will then be asked to confirm caption accuracy. Move the slider to update the accuracy of your captions. Human-reviewed captions are typically 96-99% accurate.

Order Captions

If you have older media (ex content created in or uploaded to Kaltura Media prior to August 2018) or recorded your media in a language other than English (ex French, German, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.) you can order machine captions.

From your media's Caption & Enrich area, go to the Order Captions & Enrichment Services section. Select your Source Media Language and click Submit.

Your captions will be ordered. The process may take several minutes to several hours, depending on the length of your media.

Manage Captions

To manage your captions, go to your Kaltura My Media, locate your media, and click on the edit (pencil) icon.

This will bring you to the Edit Media page. Click on the Captions tab to edit your caption details, delete or download your caption file, or upload a new caption file or extended audio description.

Upload a Captions File

You can upload caption files for any of your media. Each media entry can include multiple caption files (such as subtitles in different languages) and you can label each file appropriately.

From the Edit Media page, select the Captions tab. Click the Upload captions file button and select a file to upload. Supported file types include SRT, DFXP, and VTT.

You will then be prompted to select the language, enter the accuracy, and add a label. Click Save to upload your captions file.

Your file will be added to the captions table.

Set a Default Captions File

If you have multiple caption files, you can set one as default. Locate your captions file in the captions table and click Set as default. Once set, a small Default label appears in the Language column.

Add Extended Audio Description

To upload an extended audio description file, go to your media's Edit Media page and select the Captions tab. Click the Upload extended audio description button and select a VTT file to upload.

You will then be prompted to select the language, enter the accuracy, and add a label. When adding a label, it's recommended to add EAD to clearly identify the file as an extended audio description (ex "English EAD").

Click Save to upload your EAD file.

Your file will be added to the captions table.

Edit Caption Details

To edit your caption file's language, label, or accuracy, locate your caption file in the captions table. In the Actions column,  select the Edit (pencil) icon.

Edit your caption details and click Save to save your changes.

Download Captions File

To download your captions file, locate your file in the captions table. In the Actions column, click the download icon.

Delete Captions File

To delete your captions file, locate your file in the captions table. In the Actions column, click the delete (X) icon.

Show/Don't Show on Player

If you do not want your captions file to show in the video player, locate your file in the captions table. In the Actions column, click the don't show icon.

Once activated, your captions won't be accessible through the CC button on the media player.
