Kaltura Media: Captioning Video Content

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Overview

Kaltura Media has the ability to automatically caption your media content using automatic speech recognition (ASR), commonly known as machine captions. When media is uploaded, the captioning processes begins immediately. Captions are created based on the audio track and the content is assumed to be in English.

Machine captions are only 80% accurate and accuracy may vary depending on the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. We recommend using the machine captions as a starting point - you will want to edit them for accuracy.

All media created in or uploaded to Kaltura Media since August 6, 2018 has been captioned automatically. However, if you have older content you can request machine captions.

Review and Edit Captions

Machine captions are considered to be 80% accurate and accuracy may vary depending on the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. We recommend using the machine captions as a starting point - you will want to edit them for accuracy.

You can review and edit your captions in your Kaltura My Media.

Go to the tools area and select Kaltura My Media

Locate your media and click on the title to open.

Click on the Actions button below the media. This will open a menu. Select Caption & Enrich.

This will bring up to a list of the caption requests for this video. Select your captions request and click Edit (pencil icon).

This will launch a new window and display the caption editor. Here, you may edit the text, change the timestamp, add speakers, and more.

For detailed instructions on editing captions, refer to Kaltura Media's Editing Captions support article.
