How do I share media (audio/video) with my students?
The best way to share media (audio/video) with your students will depend on whether it is media you have created or media that others have created.
Media you created
To share media you have created, including recorded lectures or narrated presentations, upload your media to myLesley via Kaltura Media.
Kaltura provides a lot of advantages, both to you and your students, including:
- Compatibility: Kaltura Media will accept a large amount of media types and automatically convert them to versions your students can view, regardless of their device.
- Accessibility: Kaltura Media will automatically caption your media content. Accurate captioning of audio and video content ensures that people who are Deaf and hard of hearing can understand your content. Additionally, captions are very useful to non-native English speakers, viewers watching in a sound-sensitive environment such as a library, can help viewers with learning disabilities or attention deficits maintain concentration, and can help all learners improve comprehension.
- File Size: Students do not have to download content. Instead, the media is hosted on Kaltura's servers and streams through myLesley. Uploading your media to Kaltura does not impact your overall course or organization file size (all courses have a 5 GB data limit and organizations have a 50 MB data limit).
- Privacy and Security: Kaltura Media content cannot be downloaded by anyone who is not the owner, nor can it be shared on other websites.
You may use Kaltura Media to upload media you have already created or record a new video using your browser and webcam.

Media created by others
If you are not the creator of the media or do not have permissions from the publisher, you cannot upload the media into your course. This includes copies of DVDs that you have purchased. If the content exists on the web (ex YouTube, PBS, library media databases), you may either link to it or embed it in your course.

Do not download media from the internet or library databases and and upload it into myLesley or Kaltura as this may violate copyright!
How can my students share media with me?
Students may use Kaltura Media to upload media they have already created or record new media. Students can upload their media into a Discussion, Journal, Assignment, or anywhere they see the text/content editor.

What is the best way to share presentations?
Recorded Presentations
You and your students may create and record presentations and share them in myLesley via Kaltura Media.
- Upload media to myLesley via Kaltura Media
- Record a Presentation and Share it in myLesley via Kaltura Media
PowerPoint files with images and/or embedded media
Unless there is a need to zoom in on the images to view details, you do not need to share high-resolution images in your PowerPoint. Before uploading your presentation into myLesley, reduce your file size by compressing your images and media files. This will create a smaller file for your students to download and access. Optionally, you can save your PowerPoint as a PDF to reduce file size.
- Reduce the file size of a picture in Microsoft Office
- Compress your media files (PowerPoint)
- Create accessible PDFs
How do I share Zoom recordings?
The best way to share your Zoom recording depends on how you recorded your meeting and how you want/need to share these recordings. Refer to the Zoom: Getting Started with Recording support article for more information.
Share a Zoom cloud recording
If you recorded your Zoom meeting in the cloud, simply send a link to the Zoom cloud recording to your students. They can watch the recording online at their convenience. Please note that students cannot download cloud recordings.
There is a 6 month retention period for Zoom recordings. If you need your students to access recordings after 6 months, please use a different sharing option. Refer to the Zoom Cloud Storage Retention support article for more information.
Record locally and share via myLesley
If you recorded your Zoom meeting locally (to your computer), upload your recording to myLesley via Kaltura Media. Please note that students cannot download Kaltura Media content.
Record locally and share via OneDrive
If you recorded your Zoom meeting locally (to your computer), go to OneDrive in Office365, upload your recording, and share the OneDrive link or share the file with specific people. Check your sharing permissions and decide whether to allow others to download your recording.
I have to share large files or accept large files from my students. What's the best way to do this?
If you need to share large files or accept large files from your students, including hi-res images or videos in their original format, use OneDrive in Office365. OneDrive allows for fast uploads and downloads and won't count against your course quota (all courses have a 5 GB data limit and communities have a 50 MB data limit). Refer to the Share OneDrive Files and Folders support article for more information.

Edit Captions in Kaltura Media
When you upload content to Kaltura Media, Kaltura will automatically caption your content using automatic speech recognition (ASR), commonly known as machine captions. Machine captions are considered to be 80% accurate and accuracy may vary depending on the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. We recommend using the machine captions as a starting point and editing them for accuracy.
For more information and detailed instructions, refer to the Kaltura Media: Captioning Video Content support article.
