Copying myLesley Courses (Original Course View)

Close Your Course (Make Your Course Unavailable to Students)

When you copy content from a previous course into your current course, certain items, such as Due Dates, are included in the copy. In order to prevent students from seeing old information while you are updating your content, we strongly suggest setting your course to Closed or Unavailable before copying your course.


When a course is Closed, the course appears in students' course listings but they cannot access it until you open it.


Students will see the course marked as Closed and a popup message that says "You can't access this course right now. Your instructor will allow access when the course is ready. Please try again later."



To close your course, go into your Original course and click the Course Availability (Lock icon) at the top of the page. This will open a menu. Select Make Unavailable to close your course.

Copy Your Course 

You may copy your course materials from one course into the next by using the Copy Course function. 


To begin, go to the course Control Panel, select Packages and Utilities and select Course Copy.

This will bring you into the Copy Course Area. In Select Copy Type area, select Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course.

In the Select Copy Options area, select the destination course (the course you wish to copy content into) by clicking the Browse button and locating your course.

Next, select the course materials you wish to copy. As a best practice, we recommend clicking Select All to make an exact copy of your course. 


Then: 

  1. Announcements: Uncheck the option to copy Announcements. Checking this options will copy all of the Announcements from your previous course. 
  2. Discussion Board: Select Include only the forums. with no starter posts.
    Copying the starter posts will copy the students' posts from your previous course into your new course. 
  3. Settings: Select Navigation Settings to ensure you make an exact copy of your course menu.

In the File Attachments area, select Copy Links and copies of the content. This will ensure that any files or attachments are copied into your course.

Once you have finished, click Submit at the bottom of the page.

Review Your Copied Content

 Review your copied content to ensure that it looks and functions as intended. Pay special attention to the following:

  • Due Dates: If your gradable items have due dates assigned, these will come over in the copy. You may adjust the due dates for each item one at a time or use the Date Management tool to automatically adjust the due dates.
  • Content and Formatting: Check all of your content for formatting issues, including text and spacing, broken links, attachments, and more. Pay special attention to embedded content, such as videos. If your formatting or content is wonky, you may edit or recreate it using the myLesley Text/Content Editor.
  • Update or Set Release Dates: Control the dates that your content is available for your students, including modules, folders, items, assignments, and more. 



Copy Request Form

If you would like to have a member of the eLIS staff copy content into your upcoming class shell on Blackboard please fill out the Copy Request Form. There is a 2 business day turn around time for this service.



Open Your Course (Make Your Course Available to Students)

Once your course is ready, you may make it available to students. To open your course, go into your Original course and click the Course Availability (Lock icon) at the top of the page. This will open a menu. Select Make Available to open your course.

Archive Your Course

If you wish to archive a past or recently ended course, we recommend using the archive function. This will allow you to save a .zip file to your computer containing all the content of your course. This .zip file can be imported into a future myLesley course or safely saved in your OneDrive on Office 365. See Archiving myLesley Courses for detailed instructions.
