Linking to Files, Internal Pages, and External Sites

Linking to a File (PDF, Word, Excel) once it has been uploaded:

If you have not uploaded the file yet, read this article first.

  1. On the web page, highlight the text you want to link. Use keywords or descriptive language for the link text.

Do not use “click here" for links. Include the document type in parenthesis. You always want to warn a user if they are going to be taken to a download.

Example: Download the Undergraduate Student Health Form (PDF).

  2. Click on hyperlink button in the editor toolbar. It looks like a chain link.

  3. Start typing in the name of the PDF. It should come up in the window automatically. Select.

If the name of the PDF does not come up in the window when you start typing, backtrack to find the URL to the document. Go into Media > search, find the PDF, click on it, and when the window opens, click on the blue link. The URL for the PDF will appear in the browser window and look something like this:

    https://lesley.edu/sites/default/files/2017-10/Reggio-Workshop-Registration-Form-17-18.pdf

You’ll have to paste the relative URL (anything after the .edu) in the window, including the firs forward slash (/sites/default/files/2017-10/Reggio-Workshop-Registration-Form-17-18.pdf).

  4. Select, then click on "Advanced" and check the box next to "open in new window" and save.

  5. Always test your links. Go to the page and click on your new link to make sure it works.

Linking from a page on lesley.edu to another internal page or to external sites:

  1. On the web page, highlight the text you want to link and click on the hyperlink tool in the editor tool bar. It looks like a chain link. (See instructions above.)

    1. For internal links going to other Lesley University pages:

Start typing the name of the page in the URL box and the it should pop up. If it doesn’t, you can also paste the relative URL in the link box, meaning anything after the “.edu”. Example: /human-resources-office.

Do NOT click "open in a new window" if you are linking from one Lesley page to another Lesley page.

Save. Then, test your links. Go to the web page where you added the link and click on it to make sure it works.

    2. For external links going to outside websites:

Go to the website in a new browser window, for example, cnn.com. Copy the URL from the browser window, and paste it into the URL box in Drupal.  Click "Advanced" and check off the box "open in new window." Save. Then, test your links. Go to the web page where you added the link and click on it to make sure it works.

Note! Do not link to external websites unless you have vetted them and you find they are useful to our students or prospects. If you get unsolicited “please link to my website” requests, ignore it.
